About the Guerrilla

I’m Katie, a recent graduate from the University of Minnesota, where I was a Global Studies major focusing on Latin America and Sustainable Development. I am putting my degree to good use working in a coffee shop and saving up for long-term travel in Europe and Latin America. I don’t know what my career or life goals are (besides having fun and being happy), but right now I am excited about being a derby girl, writing, and learning to play the guitar. I have been a vegetarian for about 3 years and eventually intend to transition to veganism (I have willpower problems, which is a poor excuse). I stopped eating meat for ethical and environmental reasons. After hearing about the environmental impact of meat consumption and factory farming one too many times in class, I couldn’t ignore the message anymore. Being vegetarian makes me feel strong and healthy. It has also meant reducing my reliance on processed foods and unsustainable mass-produced products, something I have carried over into all aspects of my life. My goal for this blog is to celebrate this DIY (Do it Yourself!) and independent attitude as an alternative to mainstream culture and to inspire myself and others to lead a positive life. I also like to write about other radical things that inspire me such as feminism, punk/other awesome musical situations, organizing, political issues, activism, books, etc.

We don’t HAVE to be such a big part of the consumer-driven, capitalist system that says we have to buy a product for everything and can’t make anything for ourselves. We can do so much better, and it’s empowering to do things for yourself! Don’t let “the man” get you down! I don’t want to get bogged down in a way of living that feels oppressive, spirit-crushing, and selfish. As Crass said,“The system may have got you, but it won’t get me!”

Please feel free to comment and start a discussion. I want to hear from you!

  1. Sorry, 23 (that’s what your mom calls you when we talk), but WordPress is all screwed up and I’m trying to make sure it gives you the proper contact info. Mom told me you replied to something i wrote, but because of WP being screwed up, I never knew about it. Bear with me. If none of this makes sense, ask your mom.

    Sarah!
